Our backup administrator has left the company. I never realized how mismanaged the backup system was until he left. He was keeping the system barely above water with many failed jobs. We have since gotten a temporary backup admin who is making it all look easy. Jobs are completing. The system isn’t running out of tapes. The consultant is making it work and that’s encouraging. BTW, we are using Backup Exec 11d with a Quantum m2500 robotic tape library.

I’d be interested in knowing if it really was messed up, or is that just the consultant trying to make the previous employee look bad/justify their contribution. Was there a process in place to validate how successful the jobs were prior to the employee leaving the company? Just curious.
Hi Andy,
I had no responsibility for the backup system so I don’t know what steps were taken to validate success. All I know is that other managers complained about the system often. I have looked at the system since the admin left and saw what the managers were talking about. There were jobs failing for a number of reasons. One of them was not enough free tapes in the system. The temporary admin is proactively solving problems and proving the system CAN work. The consultant knows that this is a temporary gig and has no incentive to make anyone look bad. Thanks!
